Fort McHenry: The Historic Site Where America’s Anthem Came to Life

Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine is one of Baltimore’s most significant and historically rich landmarks. This monument is located in the Baltimore Harbor and was built 1798 and 1800. Fort McHenry is most famous for its role in the War of 1812. British Forces attempted to capture the fort to take Baltimore, which at the time was a key American port city. However, the Americans were able to repel the British attack and Baltimore remained under U.S. control.

Francis Scott Key, who was aboard a British ship at the time of the siege, wrote the poem “Defence of Fort McHenry” which later became the lyrics for the U.S. national anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner.” Key wrote this poem because he was inspired by the American flag waving over the fort after battle, signifying American victory and resilience.

There are many things to see at Fort McHenry, such as The Star Spangled Banner, the fort itself, the visitor center which features exhibits about the history of the war, and the historic Flag House. Fort McHenry is a must see historical site in Baltimore that is rich with history of the United States.
